Something new to try - Silk Hankies!
Also called "mawata", silk hankies are created by degumming silk cocoons and carefully stretching them over a square frame, in layers, to create a stacked hanky shape. Each layer is very thin and can be peeled off and used in a number of ways. As my husband says, it's a little like layers in a flakey biscuit!
Once you have separated a layer from the stack, you can attenuate it into a thin strand for spinning, incorporation into art yarns, weaving, or you can even knit straight from the hanky. The silk is very strong and will not come apart, creating a lightweight, drapey fabric. The hankies can also be used in felting projects. Try some today!
I've published a helpful blog post with videos and photos showing how to use this fiber - check it out at http://bit.ly/silkhankies.
This listing is for 10 grams (approximately 10-12 individual hankies) in the colorway "Candy Corn", which features bright yellows, orange, and a pop of white.
Ingredients:
- 100% silk
Classy Squid Fiber Co. fibers are designed to provide a wonderful spinning experience, but would also be gorgeous if used for felted designs or as accents in weaving. My Organic Polwarth & Falkland wools are sourced from the Falkland Islands, UK, where the sheep are raised free of pesticides & chemicals in a pristine environment. Fibers are hand-dyed by me, Amanda, in my smoke-free, pet-free studio using professional grade acid dyes. I do my utmost to run my dyeing studio in an environmentally-friendly manner.
To care for your creations and avoid felting, hand-wash your items in warm (not hot) water with a mild wool wash such as Eucalan or Soak, without agitation, and allow to air-dry.
